Equinox Announces 2025 Q4 Project Contributions to Evergreen ILS

Atlanta, Ga., January 26, 2026: Equinox Open Library Initiative, a trusted leader in open source technology development and support for libraries, is pleased to announce Q4 development and community contributions for Evergreen ILS.

Recent projects for Evergreen included a wishlist feature to create hold policies based on Library Groups. This project also added the ability to clone a Circulation Policy, a long-desired tool. Equinox staff performed additional work integrating the Quipu eRENEW product with Evergreen, building on work earlier in the year for Quipu eCARD. Partners for these projects included the Evergreen Collaborative Development Initiative (ECDI) as well as the Pennsylvania Integrated Library System (PaILS).

“We are proud of the work we contributed in the last quarter of 2025,” said Andrea Buntz Neiman, Project Manager for Software Development at Equinox. “The joint development effort between Equinox and the Evergreen community to bring the best features to libraries is at the heart of Equinox’s mission and we are grateful to our partners who work with us to make it possible.”

Equinox Partners with Unique Management Services to Launch MessageBee SMS for Homer Public Library

Atlanta, Ga., January 20, 2026: Equinox Open Library Initiative, a trusted leader in open source technology development and support for libraries, is pleased to announce that the Homer Public Library is live on MessageBee SMS through a partnership between Equinox and Unique Management Services (Unique).

“MessageBee SMS expands the range of text-communication options available to Homer patrons,” said David Berry, Director of Homer Public Library. “Equinox provided technical support to link automatic patron notifications, such as hold notices and card-expiration alerts, to Unique’s MessageBee service.”

Homer Public Library was founded in the 1940s and serves the community of Homer, Alaska on the Southern Kenai Peninsula. Equinox has been working with the Homer Public Library since 2023.

“MessageBee improves the patron experience and simplifies library workflows, increasing user satisfaction,” said Rogan Hamby, Data and Project Manager at Equinox. “We are excited to help make available MessageBee’s SMS offerings alongside Unique Management Services to Homer Public Library.”

“Greenville Public Library is excited to have Evergreen and Aspen Discovery! Staff here are thrilled with the ease of this transition made possible by the excellent support staff from Equinox,” said Joanna Brown, Supervisor and Youth Services Programmer at Greenville Public Library. “Patrons will now have access to so many more options; we couldn’t be happier with our experience.”

The Greenville Public Library was founded in 1856 by the Greenville Ladies Library Association. They have joined COOL, a membership organization of libraries in the state of Ohio that utilize Evergreen ILS. The consortium is supported by OhioNet, a 501(c)(3) that provides consulting, continuing education, cooperative purchasing, and systems and data support to its member libraries. Equinox has been working with COOL and OhioNet since 2011.

Aspen Discovery is a highly customizable, open source discovery layer designed to make library collections more accessible and engaging for patrons. The Evergreen Indiana Library Consortium (Evergreen Indiana) added Aspen Discovery services for its members with Equinox in 2024.

“Porter County Public Library System has been using Aspen Discovery since 2021 and we have been really pleased with the positive impact it has made for patrons,” said Elizabeth Hager, Collections Coordinator at Porter County Public Library System. “In moving to Equinox hosting and support alongside Evergreen Indiana Library Consortium, our patrons will continue to enjoy the powerful search and functionality Aspen Discovery offers.”

Evergreen Indiana is a growing consortium of libraries throughout Indiana that are using Evergreen ILS and Aspen Discovery. The Indiana State Library provides funding in addition to technical support, training, and software development of Evergreen ILS on behalf of its member libraries.

Equinox is partnering with Backstage Library Works to make authority control easy for libraries. Services from Backstage Library Works include Basefile Authority Control, Current Cataloging, and Authority Control Notification Services. Equinox manages the extracts and retrieval and loading of updated records.

“Implementing Backstage Library Works for our authority control services through our partnership with Equinox was very simple to do with little stress,” said Theresa Barnaby, Technical Services Supervisor at Richland Public Library. “We have been happy with this collaboration, and are impressed by the improved quality of our records. The result has been a catalog that is cleaner and has significantly enhanced our patrons’ ability to access the material they are looking for.”

Richland Public Library was established in 1951 to serve the community of Richland, Washington and its more than 60,000 residents. Since 2012, Richland has relied on Equinox for Evergreen ILS hosting and support.

“Backstage Library Works and Equinox’s partnership takes the pressure off of cataloging for libraries,” said Rogan Hamby, Data and Project Manager at Equinox. “This allows libraries to arrange for workflows that suit them best and frees time and resources for other priorities. Equinox Announces Major Features in Evergreen 3.16

Atlanta, Ga., December 8, 2025: Equinox Open Library Initiative, a trusted leader in open source technology development and support for libraries, is pleased to announce Evergreen 3.16, the latest release of the award-winning library software used by more than 1,800 libraries worldwide. Equinox’s development team contributed 8 major features, 6 minor features, and 10 of 32 bugfixes.

Features contributed by Equinox include single sign-on for library staff sponsored by North Carolina Community College Evergreen, built-in integration for Quipu eCARD and eRENEW services supported by the Pennsylvania Integrated Library System, circulation payments which can now be marked nonrefundable backed by the Kenton County Public Library, and the ability to search and display accessibility metadata from MARC bibliographic records, plus additional usability and accessibility improvements with support from the BC Libraries Cooperative.

Equinox also provided in-kind services for Evergreen 3.16 with Galen Charlton, Implementation and IT Manager, serving as Release Manager, and additional staff providing assistance and testing, including Andrea Buntz Neiman, Mike Rylander, Jason Boyer, Jason Etheridge, and Steve Callender.

“It was satisfying to release Evergreen 3.16 during the Evergreen Hack-A-Way in Columbia, Missouri,” said Charlton. “So much of what makes Evergreen significant is its community. At Equinox we are thankful for everyone who played a part in the release and are excited to announce the arrival of this latest version.”

“We are pleased to bring forward highly anticipated features in Evergreen 3.16 such as Staff Single Sign On,” said Andrea Buntz Neiman, Project Manager for Software Development at Equinox. “We have been collaborating with the Evergreen community and with our development partners to make this possible.”

Equinox Announces New Deadline for the 2025 Equinox Open Source Grant

Launched in 2019, the Equinox Open Source Grant provides implementation, training, hosting, and support services for Koha ILS to eligible libraries and institutions. The grant is offered to organizations with technological or financial challenges that make it difficult to obtain or maintain an integrated library system. The Equinox Open Source Grant is provided for an initial term of three years and can be renewed if the recipient continues to qualify for the grant. Equinox Welcomes the Grand Rapids Public Library to Sequoia Hosting for Evergreen ILS

Grand Rapids Public Library migrated from a self-hosted Evergreen ILS to Sequoia with Equinox.

“When evaluating a shift from internal to external hosting, Equinox seemed like our best option to allow for a new structure that provided support,” said Ann Neff-Rohs, Director of Collections at the Grand Rapids Public Library. “We have been impressed by Equinox’s consistent dedication to helping us make key decisions and find solutions that meet our needs.”

Equinox Welcomes Ozark Regional Library to the Missouri Evergreen Consortium

Atlanta, Ga., November 3, 2025: Equinox Open Library Initiative, a trusted leader in open source technology development and support for libraries, is pleased to welcome the Ozark Regional Library to the Missouri Evergreen Consortium.

“The support from Equinox during Ozark Regional Library’s migration to the Missouri Evergreen Consortium has been outstanding,” said Michelle Swane, Library Director at Ozark Regional Library. “Their team provided clearly defined support roles, tailored training for our system’s needs, and ensured a seamless transition with troubleshooting, continued training, and supplemental resources. We are grateful for their expertise and commitment, which made moving from a standalone Evergreen library to a consortium smooth and successful.”

Ozark Regional Library has provided library services to southeast Missouri for over seventy years, which allowed libraries in the region to share funding for collections and library programming.
