Equinox Open Library Initiative Partners with OCLC to Provide Access to the WorldCat Metadata API for Mutual Customers

Blue gear image with OCLC and Equinox logos on the same square.

Atlanta, Ga., March 18, 2024: Equinox Open Library Initiative, a trusted leader in open source technology development and support for libraries, and OCLC, the worldwide leader in library cataloging and metadata services, are partnering to offer access to the WorldCat Metadata API for OCLC cataloging libraries using service platforms supported by Equinox. The integration is available to mutual customers.

This new partnership will be the first to provide integration with the WorldCat Metadata API through the OCLC Partner Platform Program, which allows partners to integrate OCLC cataloging, discovery, and resource sharing functionality through a variety of APIs. The program also allows library service providers to integrate with OCLC’s WorldShare Management Services and OCLC Wise library service platforms.

“We’re excited to partner with Equinox to offer this integration and added functionality for our mutual customers,” said Chip Nilges, OCLC Vice President, Business Development, Membership and Research. “This partnership promotes choice and flexibility in library services. We want to make it easy for libraries to use OCLC services through the platforms and service providers they choose.”

For its first service integration, Equinox plans to integrate the WorldCat Metadata API with the Westchester (New York) Library System, an Evergreen ILS customer that will be conducting a pilot project using the NightShift program for cataloging. This integration will support Westchester’s cataloging efforts by allowing them to more efficiently identify high quality records from WorldCat. Equinox will also make metadata integration available to their customers using the Koha ILS.

“We are pleased to announce this partnership with OCLC which will provide new efficiencies for Evergreen ILS and Koha ILS libraries using OCLC services,” said Lisa Carlucci, Executive Director at Equinox. “Libraries benefit directly from collaborative innovation and the shared expertise of vendor partners. We look forward to working with OCLC and to supporting the Westchester Library System during their pilot.”

WorldCat is the most comprehensive global network of data about library collections. OCLC’s team of expert catalogers and data quality specialists create and constantly enrich WorldCat records with new, corrected, and updated information to ensure that WorldCat contains the highest quality records possible. OCLC’s Business Development team works with Content Providers worldwide to enhance WorldCat and ensure that the latest metadata is available for library users. Library staff members also contribute and enhance records and set holdings through their OCLC Cataloging and Metadata Subscription, ensuring that their library’s collections are represented in WorldCat.

The WorldCat Metadata API allows libraries to search, retrieve and maintain their bibliographic and holdings data in WorldCat. Libraries can also search for and view summary holdings and shared print retention information from OCLC member libraries.

Find more about OCLC Partnership opportunities on the website.

OCLC welcomes other interested partners in the Partner Platform Program to reach out at https://www.oclc.org/en/partnerships.html#partner-program-contact.

Pennsylvania Integrated Library System Selects Equinox as Evergreen ILS Support Provider

Equinox Press Release logo indicating that this post is a press release.

Atlanta, Ga., February 15, 2024: Equinox Open Library Initiative, a trusted leader in open source technology development and support for libraries, is pleased to announce that the Pennsylvania Integrated Library System (PaILS) has selected Equinox as their support provider for Evergreen ILS.

“PaILS is happy to continue our 11 year relationship with Equinox Open Library Initiative,” said Katie Greenleaf Martin, Executive Director at PaILS. “We value the quick response time and wide range of services offered by Equinox and look forward to many future projects. We enjoy working with Equinox staff to collaborate with us in creating solutions for our libraries.”

PaILS was founded in June 2011 as a non-profit organization to provide an open source integrated library system for Pennsylvania libraries. It oversees SPARK, the Evergreen ILS managed by PaILS on behalf of its member libraries across Pennsylvania. Equinox and PaILS have worked together to support SPARK since 2013.

“We are excited to extend our relationship with PaILS as the consortium continues to grow and to provide excellent service to the libraries of Pennsylvania,” said Lisa Carlucci, Executive Director at Equinox. “The PaILS consortium is actively involved with the Evergreen community and their leadership and contributions help ensure that Evergreen continues to evolve and meet the emerging needs of their libraries.”

Over the last eleven years, PaILS and Equinox have worked together to migrate 118 branch libraries to SPARK and added more than 2.6 million bibliographic records. This work directly benefited more than 848,000 patrons of SPARK libraries.

PaILS and Equinox have also partnered to complete significant development work for Evergreen ILS. Notable projects include the Emergency Closing Handler, which added the ability to create and immediately process an “emergency closing” that pushes back due dates and voids fines in the event of an unexpected closure. Library Groups (or Lassos) allows libraries to create independent, non-hierarchical groups for searching the OPAC and display them selectively (i.e. only at specific libraries). Development work on Carousels for PaILS replaced the existing functionality with one that was fully featured and database supported providing greater flexibility in creating, maintaining, and displaying Carousels.

In 2020, PaILS provided funding for the development of Curbside Pickup, a project designed by Equinox which helped libraries maintain services during pandemic-related closures. Most recently, Equinox and PaILS developed the Custom Penalties feature which creates a group of library settings allowing libraries to provide more granular penalty thresholds and rules.

“We are really proud of the development we’ve accomplished in partnership with PaILS,” said Andrea Buntz Neiman, Project Manager for Software Development. “Our collaboration has benefited both Pennsylvania Libraries and the Evergreen community over the years and demonstrates how one consortium can positively impact an open source community for the better. We are looking forward to continuing our work with PaILS on innovative development for Evergreen.”

Atlanta, Ga., November 9, 2023: Equinox Open Library Initiative, a trusted leader in open source technology development and support for libraries, is pleased to announce the migration of the Rosenbach Museum and Library to Koha ILS as part of their membership with the Philadelphia Area Consortium of Special Collection Libraries.

The Rosenbach Museum and Library was founded in 1954 with a mission to  celebrate the art of the written word. In 2013, they became affiliated with the Free Library of Philadelphia Foundation. Their migration to Koha included 3,365 bibliographic records and 3,366 item records. Equinox provided implementation, hosting, support, and training services as part of the migration process.

The Philadelphia Area Consortium of Special Collection Libraries was established in 1985 to enhance the visibility and support of member institutions. In the thirty years since its inception, it has doubled in size and continues to support area libraries through its working groups, project support, and setting of best practices.

“Koha can put special collections at the fingertips of a wide audience, and it is exciting to work with such amazing collections as those housed at the Rosenbach Museum and Library,” said Galen Charlton, Implementation and IT Manager at Equinox. “We have seen firsthand how open source makes organizations more flexible and dynamic. It is exciting to see several cultural organizations with the Philadelphia Area Consortium of Special Collection Libraries adopt Koha.”

CORAL’s interoperable modules allow libraries to streamline their management of electronic resources and leverage useful tools such as customized acquisitions workflows, license comparison and management, vendor and subscription management, and COUNTER-compliant reporting tools.

“If you’re interested in learning more about CORAL, please join us for the 2023 CORAL Community Meeting,” said Rebecca Tatterson, Electronic Resources Librarian at East Carolina University. “Presented by members of the CORAL Steering Committee, presentations will be followed by a community discussion in which we will answer questions and information about how CORAL is used at our libraries. We hope to see you there!”

The CORAL project is led by the CORAL Steering Committee, and the software is developed and maintained by community contributions to the project. Equinox has worked with the CORAL community since 2021.
