Equinox Announces Accessible VuFindⓇ Theme

Atlanta, Ga., April 21, 2023: Equinox Open Library Initiative, a trusted leader in open source technology development and support for libraries, is pleased to announce a newly designed and accessible theme now available for VuFindⓇ. The Equinox theme for VuFindⓇ offers an attractive, responsive, user-friendly interface designed to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA compliance.

“The Equinox theme for VuFindⓇ brings VuFindⓇ’s powerful search capabilities to a wider community of people. Accessibility is about making sure everyone can accomplish their task within a web interface – whether that’s a patron putting a book on hold or a staff member updating settings, the software shouldn’t be in the way,” said Stephanie Leary, Front End Developer at Equinox. “VuFindⓇ offers so much to libraries, and I’m excited to have the opportunity to focus on accessibility.”

VuFindⓇ is an open source discovery layer developed and maintained by Villanova University’s Falvey Memorial Library. It brings the entirety of a library’s physical and digital holdings together into an intuitive, single search.

The VuFindⓇ theme from Equinox improves on this foundation with a clean and modern design for intuitive and accessible searching. Interactive controls have been refined for interoperability with assistive technologies. The theme is easily customizable for branding and designed to take maximum advantage of future development by the VuFindⓇ community.

“The development of the Equinox theme for VuFindⓇ is one of the ways that Equinox is giving back to the community as a VuFindⓇ Registered Service Provider,” said Galen Charlton, Implementation and IT Manager at Equinox. “We look forward to continuing to work with the community to improve accessibility in the core product as well.”

Equinox Welcomes Homer Public Library to Sequoia Hosting with Evergreen ILS

Equinox Welcomes Homer Public Library to Sequoia Hosting with Evergreen ILS

Atlanta, Ga., April 19, 2023: Equinox Open Library Initiative, a trusted leader in open technology development and support for libraries, is excited to welcome Homer Public Library (AK) to Sequoia, Equinox’s cloud-based platform for library automation services, with the hosting of their instance of Evergreen ILS.

“Homer Public Library has used Evergreen since 2013 but it was hosted locally until last month,” said David Berry, Director of Homer Public Library. “In March we went live with Sequoia hosting, which will relieve some of the burden on the city IT department and help us keep up to date with features and security. The transition went well—Equinox staff put together a detailed timeline, handled technical considerations and provided customized training for library staff. We’re glad the changeover went so smoothly and we’re looking forward to exploring the new features included in the upgrade!”

Homer Public Library serves the communities of the Southern Kenai Peninsula in Alaska. The collection encompasses over 45,000 items and serves their community of about 12,000 users.

“Open source systems allow for real flexibility around hosting and support for libraries,” said Jason Boyer, Senior System Administrator. “We are excited to help Homer Public Library demonstrate this with the migration of their previously on-premises Evergreen system to Sequoia. We love providing libraries the options they need to best support their communities.”
